This is funny coming from me, because I've been the cranky old man standing in the way of moving away from autotools. This was mostly out of loyalty to GNU (or perhaps it was Stockholm Syndrome).

Meson is the trendy build system for GNOME these days.

Thoughts?

Following trend because it is trend is not good. That said, meson looks cleaner than autotools and cmake.

From a linux distribution maintainer's perpsective, meson's build options are extremely easy to find. autotools build options have to be gleaned from ./configure --help which is still better than finding out cmake build options, but meson is the simplest for linux distribution maintainers.
