vite / css issues

At some point after updating sveltekit (from v239 to v260) and postcss (from v8.4.5 to v8.4.6) to the latest version, I started having a very weird issue. I keep getting this error for all external css files and all .svlete files with <style> in them:

I moved back postcss and sveltekit to their previous version, but I still see this error. Actually as I was experimenting with a different versions, some would work (e.g. v245), and some would not (e.g. v250), and then the versions that worked before didn't work the next time I installed them. It's been very frustrating, and I can't find what's causing this.

I don't get this error when I comment out all css and <style> in .svelte files.

I would very much appreciate any help with this.

Upgrading to Vite 2.8 (currently beta) solved this issue.
