"System Configuration and Flexible Scaling" doesn't show up on Macbook M3 vs Macbook Intel: Same external display

Hi all,

I have an external display - a JSAux FlipGo - that I have been using with BetterDisplay
2 Pro on my Macbook Intel 2019. I've been using Flexible Scaling there and it's something I appreciate a lot.

However, when I connect the SAME screen to my Macbook M3 using Betterdisplay 2 Pro (same version) I don't get the options to edit System Configuration and all. In fact I get a much more limited range of options. See screenshot below. Is this a M-chips problem with BetterDisplay? Or is it something else.

Ok, so you don't recommend using it in DuoView with the Apple Silicon chips? I kind of like the separation of two screens, one window on the top and another on the bottom and using a window manager like Rectangle to switch between them. Maybe I can use betterdisplay to create a virtual screen(s) on bottom screen?

You can use BD to create virtual screens. But you can quite easily snap Windows to up/bottom (hover over the green window control icon).

Thanks once again. Yeah, I see the benefit and the amazing number of resolutions you get in Ultraview Portrait.

I guess I just need to get used to working with 2 screens instead of 3 screens (2 from the FlipGo in DuoView). I'll probably try to figure out a way using either Virtual Screens in BD, or I just need to get used to the shortcuts in Rectangle Pro to manage the windows the way I want.

@waydabber Sorry to be pinging you again. I think all of this might boil down to DisplayLink connection being used and therefore the lack of resolutions, correct? When I made the change and use the DisplayPort USB-C connector I do get all the resolution in their glory, but not when I use the DisplayLink.

I have another setup at work where I have my Macbook in ClamShell, and I use the FlipGo on my side and a bigger widescreen monitor as my main display. In this case, if I connect the FlipGo through the native connection then I can't connect the bigger widescreen monitor to it - DisplayLink Manager just seems to ignore it (or probably MacOs?). When I reconnect the FlipGo through DisplayLink connection, then it works but of course I loose all resolutions - it's DisplayLink to blame, right?

Yes, DisplayLink is the limiting factor. Since it has a proprietary software that creates a virtual display and sends its compressed video over USB, the app can't arbitrarily create additional resolutions for it.
