Trouble controling volume on external speakers connected to monitor

Here's my set up:

MacBook M3 Pro
Dell U3219Q monitor connected via HDMI through an Anker USB-C media hub (multi-port)
External speakers plug in via a headphone cable from the monitor to the speakers

The speakers sound great, but I can't control the volume via the native Mac audio control presumably because the monitor is connected via HDMI. I installed BetterDisplay and see the audio slider for the Dell monitor, but it doesn't have any effect on volume. Any ideas? Thanks - much appreciated!

Sadly not all displays support volume control via DDC. If this is the case, you can use apps (like eqMac, etc) that control the audio output using a software audio filter driver.
