Unable to select "unsafe" resolution

Similar 1920 x 360 display issue as discussed here #972

In my case, I have two external displays attached to M1 Studio, a typical 27" LG and the wide screen (both connected with Thunderbolt to HDMI cables). I have both Allow resolutions marked as invalid" and Show display modes marked as unsafe or invalid enabled. I added a Custom scaled resolution of 1920 x 360 and enabled an Edited default resolution to the same value. The desired resolution shows up as an available option in the Display Mode menu, but will simply not select.

I tried to follow the Stream Display suggestion in the above discussion, but the wide display is not available as a target under Stream the contents of this to . The BetterDisplay UI has also changed substantially so it's difficult to understand how to pursue this option.

When I connect this same display to a 2019 MacBook Pro, the display "just works" (no need for BetterDisplay).

Hi there, you should check whether the mode even works using the following CLI commands - on some recent Apple Silicon Macs the OS simply refuses to switch mode to unsafe resolutions by default, even though it's in the mode list.

betterdisplaycli get namelike=displayname -displayModeList
betterdisplaycli set namelike=displayname -displayModeNumber=modenumber

You should still be able to change low level modes:

betterdisplaycli get namelike=displayname -connectionModeList
betterdisplaycli set namelike=displayname -connectionMode=modeidentifier

You'll need to install betterdisplaycli if you don't have it installed.

I was able to use CLI to change the brightness of the display, so have confirmed CLI access is working.

Sorry, use connectionModeListAll instead of connectionModeList to get all modes.

Note: if you use connectionMode to set a mismatching resolution, the framebuffer won't get resized - that is normal, for the led wall you might need to make extra arrangements so the content you want to show on it will get to the visible area.

Sorry, I'm not following your suggestion. The default resolution of the display is 1920 x 360 so what is mismatched exactly?

Regardless, using set connectionmode I'm able to get closer. Five matching resolutions are listed:

Option 1 produces a badly horizontally compressed output, but options 2 through 5 result in this:

Grabbing a screenshot from the desktop of the display seems to show it actually displaying a clipped view of 1920 x 1080.

Is there something I can adjust now to take advantage of the full display width?

This command changes the connection and timing at low level, but does not resize the framebuffer (video image size). It just tries to fit it somehow to the new image, usually by cropping it somehow. In this isntance it looks like it could not fit the screen properly for whatever reason, Ideally it would have just crop the bottom of the screen while keeping the width at 1920 pixels. You can try experimenting with LoDPI resolutions or other scaled resolutions that match the output better, maybe that helps. Honestly I did not experience with this part much, so I am just as interested in what happens as you are. :)
