Build compatibility with Java >8 #38

The current versions require JDK8 to build. This is owing to some methods removed from later JDK versions.

After baselining #3 on JDK 8, potentially upgrade the build to JDK 11, or at least experiment with builds on later Java to see what no longer builds/works and produce a hit list of features that need remediation/deprecation.
