after changing default AUTH_ACTIVE to true, people got a unclear message when updating and not having auth yet:

httpx.UnsupportedProtocol: Request URL is missing an 'http://' or 'https://' protocol.

maybe we should add our own error handling to give a clear message and might be good to validate the given env variables/parameters.
