The messages currently being sent out to users are hardcoded English strings with a date appended to them. Given that this system will be deployed globally, we need to fix that. There is not currently an I18N plan in place, incorporating I18N into the design (even if it means some major changes to the existing system) is within the scope for this issue, and I'm more than happy to help answer design questions or redirect questions to the appropriate parties.

This issue would be a good first-issue for anyone with JS I18N experience, and no knowledge of Firebase or Firestore are required to work on this.
