Some apps (most notably Automagic4android and Greenify) apparently implement a less obtrusive form of notification-based "service guardian" to prevent app from being killed.
Greenify is especially remarkable because it is exceptionally unobtrusive (no icon and when you "draw down" the notification area the Greenify service guardian notification is tiny and occupies extra little space)
Could Zom please consider doing something like that.
I'm running out of free space for ambient notification icons :)
