The v1.1 allows developers to pass a 'terms' field for managing terms of a post, in v1.2 there is an enhanced custom taxonomy support.
While the plugin itself does not support custom post types, nor custom taxonomies, using the v1.2 of the WordPress.com REST API, would allow developers to take advantage of existing filers, and properly syndicate not only custom post types, but also custom taxonomies.
