Important notice about the installer

We have discovered a bug that could lead to data loss in beta versions of K2EX Installer (k2vr-installer-gui)

If you installed 0.8.0 you are not affected

Am I affected by this?

Most likely not. This bug only affects installs that meet all the following criteria:

  • Installed KinectToVR before November 23rd 2020. If you installed after this date, We already fixed the bug and you are not affected.
    • Versions 2.0 and 2.0.2 are affected
    • as of November 23rd we are distributing 2.0.3 which fixes the bug
  • Installed using k2vr-installer-gui (Also seen as K2EX Installer)
    • If the installer looked like this, you are not affected
    • k2vr-installer-gui was only officially distributed on our Discord server, if you downloaded the installer from https://k2vr.tech you are not affected
  • Picked a custom installation path
    • If you left the default path (C:\K2EX or C:\Program Files\KinectToVR), you are also not affected
  • Picked a path that also contains other folders (for example just D: or D:\Software)
    • If the folder you picked was specifically created by you for KinectToVR (for example D:\Software\k2vr) and contains no other files and folders you are not affected

To recap, you're most likely affected if you:

  • Installed before November 23rd 2020
  • Used the graphical installer distributed on our Discord server
  • Changed the installation folder from the default to one that contains other files
e.g. You installed KinectToVR to D:\Software\ but that also contains D:\Software\Steam\ and D:\Software\Origin\.

If it's installed in D:\Software\KinectToVR\ then you're fine.

If you are still unsure, please don't hesitate to contact us on Discord

What happens to affected installs?

  • When uninstalling KinectToVR using the uninstaller (images of the uninstaller), it will fail to detect other folders that do not belong to KinectToVR in the same folder and delete them without warning.
    • Updating KinectToVR using a new version of the installer, will fix the bug by replacing the broken uninstaller.
  • If said directory also contained files in the root of the directory (as in, not in a subfolder), the uninstaller will correctly identify the directory as not-empty and only remove files related to KinectToVR

How many people are affected by this?

We don't believe a lot of people are affected. Not a lot of people used this version of the installer, and they would have to meet all the above criteria and want to uninstall it. So far, we only have one report of this happening to someone.

I'm affected, how do I protect my files?

The short version:

  • Do not try to uninstall KinectToVR from Add/Remove Programs.
  • Do not re-run the same installer you downloaded from our Discord server.

If you want to uninstall KinectToVR and your installation is affected, the safest way to do so is to install a new version on top of it. Important: If it asks you if you want to permanently delete the old installation directory, click No!

Even more important: BACKUP YOUR DATA (that is also general advice)

IF YOU ARE UNSURE: Please don't hesitate to contact us on Discord

Too late, my data is gone. What now?

All you can do now is restore from a backup or use data recovery software to restore your files.

Recuva can restore files on a Windows computer. If you did not write any files to the drive after uninstalling KinectToVR, all of your data can be saved.

Can I hold you accountable for my data loss?

No, but we can help walk you through file recovery.

What are we doing to prevent this?

We will DM every user who we know the installer link was sent to. We will also make an announcement. Future versions of the installer will not allow you to install KinectToVR into a folder that is not designated for it.

Developer's Note:

I am sorry for the inconvenience this issue caused. I thought I tested this thoroughly enough, but apparently I didn't. In the future, I will test everything that deletes data even more thoroughly. I did not consider that someone would choose a folder that already contains other data as the install location. As already mentioned above, please always keep backups of your data. This installer isn't the first one with that problem and definitely won't be the last. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the programs you have installed on your PC right now suffers from the same problem.

If you have any more questions, are unsure or scared, don't hesitate to contact us on Discord or by commenting on the relevant issue.
