This doesn't seem to work as this gets 502 errors consistently in my attempts to use this, but it should help with transient faults.
But it is highly fragile still, even with 5 retries I've needed the fifth sometimes.

This probably needs to be a bit more selective, with 5xx errors getting a retry and 4xx errors failing immediately, but still...
