# Benefits
# Benefits of a DMP
When implemented correctly, a DMP can [benefit all stakeholders](https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1006750) of a research project despite the initial overhead of creating the DMP itself.

**Saving time and nerves:** a DMP can save time and nerves for yourself and others by planning ahead. DMPs define roles, responsibilities and efforts regarding the data and its management. Writing a DMP will also get you in touch with IT staff and your institution's data protection officer at an early stage. Writing a DMP also ensures data quality and allows you to easily trace your processing steps, making your analysis and results reproducible. Writing a DMP also allows you to manage access rights and prevent security breaches. Finally, by writing your DMP, you may be able to identify gaps and vulnerabilities in your current data management strategy at an early stage and outline solutions to fill them.

# DMP tools
Even though, it is generally possible to formulate a DMP in an office document, the use of more dynamic and machine-readable formats finally enables the full anticipated potential.

* **Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO):** in Germany the [Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO)](https://rdmorganiser.github.io/) has gained widespread adoption among institutes and consortia. This web-tool is used to create institute-wide templates and organize DMPs in different versions and share them with all stakeholders. RDMO organizes individual plans around predefined templates that reflect the requirements of the respective institution, discipline or funder. This ensures machine-actionable compatibility for administrative stakeholders and re-usability for researchers in following projects. These templates usually contain much more aspects that do not have to be answered right from the start of a project, but can be completed as the research progresses.

* **RDMO4Life** is the dedicated version of RDMO for all research institutions that work in the field of life sciences. It offers the possibility of customizing questionnaires to subject/project specific needs. If you would like to get advice on accessing/using RDMO4Life, contact [email protected].

* **Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW)** was developed by ELIXIR Netherlands and ELIXIR Czech Republic and is recommended by [Horizon Europe Programme Guide](https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/docs/2021-2027/horizon/guidance/programme-guide_horizon_en.pdf). DSW is an open-source, dynamic web form system. It was designed as an expert system and is meant for data stewards who support scientists in the creation of machine-acitonable DMP. It offers user-friendly questionnaires and many different templates (the development of your own template is also possible). Training with DSW are organised by various ELIXIR nodes.

* **DMPonline** was developed by the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) for the UK funding context, but also in use elsewhere. It is an open-source web-based tool meant for researchers. It allows the creation, reviewing and sharing of DMPs that meet institutional and funder requirements.
