There is an error where, when the ribbon diagram pdfs are opened in Adobe Illustrator, that each line is surrounded by a clipping mask. This inflates that object count in the .ai file and causes the program to run out of memory.

Use the options described here matplotlib/matplotlib#2528 to remove clipping masks from the individual lines
