I am happy with the state of this pull request and I am ready to merge it. Since I made numerous changes, @Wycott would you like to review it before I merge it in? I tried to be reasonably granular with the commits and have informative commit messages. I'm hoping all my changes make sense and you agree with them, but if you don't, I want to hear your opinions.

I didn't do a lot of testing, and I'm sure I overlooked a bug or two (probably ones I introduced), but the code can always be modified in a future pull request.

And I wanted to thank you again for the great contribution! ❤️
