phasing orbit

A transfer orbit used to alter the phase of an orbit whose elements are otherwise as desired, by switching to a lower (respectively higher) orbit to catch up (respectively fall back) to the desired phase.

When the orbit is about the body Y and the desired phase is that of a target vessel or celestial X orbiting Y, in the X–Y–Orbit reference frame, the trajectory looks like a series of loops getting closer to X.
