!! Origin Story of [[Ghost Girls]]

!! Silver Thread Textile Mill

1890s-1896, owned by Henry Parker

* Henry Parker
** Presented himself as a godly and pious man.
** At the time in order to protect the purity and honor of the young women who worked there and would block the exits so they could not meet lovers and be led into temptation.
** Henry Parker was a gambler and a philanderer, including abusing some of those young girls he was protecting.
* Fire
** In 1895 there was fire an due to the locked doors over 20 women died, one of them was [[Abigail Davis]].
* Justice
** Parker mourned in public but in private was only concerned with the inconvenience to his business.
** A year and a day after the fire, Abigail appears still soot covered and was seen entering Parker's office where he died of smoke inhalation.
*** During the intervening year, Abigail could follow and watch, but do little but become angry.
*** A year and a day later, her anger expressed itself with out [[Abigail Davis]] Doing anything different.
*** She watched an image of herself kill Parke, like she was watching from the outside.

!! Lawsuits

1896-1910, embroiled in lawsuits and largely empty and unused. Home to vagrants, orphans and desperate.

!! Side Show

1910-1912

In 1910 a ghost show celebrating the Macarbre and glorifying the deaths opened in the old Mill set up in the building.

* Theft
** [[Abigail Davis]] would steal form the till and give they money to the poor who would gather behind the building.
** This created money pressure on the owners who despite many attempts could not understand where the money was going.
* Fire
** Abigail wanted to make a statement
** She gathered power over time until she was able to burn the exhibits and just the exhibits.
** With the theft, and lack of insurance, this drove the side show out of business.

!! Warehouse

1914-1920

In 1914 the Mill was used as a warehouse until it was taken over in 1920 by precursors to the [[Syndicate]].

!! Distillery

1920-1930, proto-[[syndicate|Syndicate]]

In 1920, when prohibition passed, the property was converted into a secret distillery.

The bootleggers dug secret tunnels under the building connecting it to [[Karcer Underground]] to smuggle and distribute their product.

[[Abigail Davis]] was fond enough of the actual workers who did the distilling, but had no love of the actual bootleggers that ran the operation.

When the police came to raid the place, she warned the distillers, most of who were able to escape through the tunnels, one was shot, though Abigail didn't let him, nor did she allow fire to start despite the careless police efforts.

!! Moonlight Weavers

1937-1957, Marcus Hollloway

* Moonlight was a reference to the Silver of Silver Thread .
* A second textile factory opened on the site in 1930.
** Some thought that was tempting fate, but the owner was careful to treat the workers with dignity
* They mostly made fabrics and uniforms for various industries.
* They made military uniforms during WWII
* They occupied hundreds during its peak
* When Marcus died the factory fell to a less competent son, who wanted to the squeeze the employees to make a few more dollars for himself.
** [[Abigail Davis]] appeared to him and warned away from that path.
* Taking a huge loss the son shut down the factory and shifted production elsewhere. Moonlight Weavers was bankrupt within a few years.

!! Empty

1957-1965

Home to vagrants, homeless and desperate again.

This was when the Great Awakening happened

!! Ghost Girls Collective

1966-1978

An artists collective opened in the old Mill.

* Artists studios, galleries and commune
* Became a center of culture and creativity
* Many works of art honoring the history of the building and the Ghost Girls, specifically [[Abigail Davis]] were produced during this time.
** The myth and legend of the place grew at a time when the supernatural was returning to the world.
** Ghost Girls grew to a local motif used in posters, flyers, tattoos and lots of other things, elevating Abigail to a local urban myth known throughout the [[Reservoir]] and even [[Karcer]] wide.
** this is when Abigail transformed into a [[Spirit of Place]] or sorts.
* Cult
** In the late 70s a charismatic leader emerged and the collective took on the characteristics of a cult.
** They started recruiting impressionable young women who were seeking meaning in a changing world.
*** Some were sexually abused.
* Confrontation
** Abigail chose to privately confront the leader, hoping divert him from this course of action. it had worked with the factory owner's son.
* Capture
** The cult leader took it as an affront and managed to bind Abigail.
** He used that captured power to more thoroughly dominate the cult.
* Escape
** After 21 days, on the next full moon, Abigail broke her bonds, and the cult leader was no more.
*** Abigail was viscious and won't speak of what happened that night.
** What was left of the collective broke apart, not able to survive how things had changed.

!! Movies

1979-1981

Two movies were made in the mill one a horror movie, but not one about the true history of the place, the other a respectfully history of the Mill and Abigail.

Abigail didn't stop them, but she did nothing to make her presence known either.

!! California Registry of Places of Power

1981

As most states did, California had created a catalog of places of power and claimed them for the public good via eminent domain. The Mill was listed as Ghost Girls named for the collective rather than the original tragedy.

!! Lawrence Carter

1983-2003, Lawrence Carter

The state awarded a contract to operate the place of power in the public good and a very rich man named Lawrence Carter.

* Made a small part of the property open to the public, most was retailed for his personal, private uses. The rich were collecting places of power like yachts.
** Collected many of the works from the Ghost Girls Collective and created a public gallery and museum, though it was a small part of the space and only open a few hours a day.
** Bribed the right people so no one every inquired about what public good was being delivered.
* Sanctuary
** Carter took money in the form of a second contract to construct a municipal shelter in the case of demon attack.
*** The shelter was supposed to be open to the public and shelter at least 200.
*** Instead a luxury shelter for a dozen or so at most was built in the old smugglers tunnels, and never opened to the public.
**** This was also in vogue among the mega wealthy.
* Regret
** Abigail believes she should have done something in retrospect, but the building had always been private property and Carter was being selfish, but harming anyone. Not like the cult leader was and she was wary of intervening.
* Fraud
** Basically all of Carter's properties and deals were touched by fraud.
** A lawsuit in Nevada laid all that bare and the State of California ended the contract.

!! Intercession

The owner of the Karcer General Textile Mill, a godly man, became concerned that his young unmarried female workers were using the workplace meet young men for unwholesome purposes, though there was little evidence of this. To do his part to maintain these girls purity he locked and barred all but the main entrance to keep people coming and going who might lead the girls astray.
2003-2005

Needless to say when the fire came many of those girls he was "protecting" died of flame and smoke. A year and a day after that fire a young woman covered in soot let a police officer to the owner and his very young male lover, what my modern standards we'd call a victim and at the time would be called an abomination.
There were a number of temporary caretakers under contract by the state to administer the property. None were incentivised to do anything other than maintain it.

The owner suffered financial ruin and a year and a day later the owner died in his old factory. His lungs were full of smoke, though there had been no fire. Witnesses said they saw a soot covered girl walking away from the factory and she was identified as one of the dead girls.

(See [[Abigail Davis]])
!! Ghost Girls Group

After that it changed hands a couple of times and rebuilt into a several factories, all of which failed for one reason or another, but both workers and owners came away from a day of work, depressed and inefficient.
2006-

Finally it found some long term success as a warehouse. During prohibition it was used for smuggling and the warren of smugglers tunnels and storage was developed underneath it.
A non profit formed by a group that had had luck managing other minor places of power, formed a sister organization and raised enough money to buy the site from the state, which was divesting itself from minor places of power at the time.

* Post prohibition it continued to serve as a hub for various kind of smuggling and was eventually seized by the government and auctioned off.
* In the 80s it was purchased by a wealthy businessman, who turned the tunnels into a posh survival bunker, this was a common practice among the uber wealthy in the wake of the [[Kaiju Demon|Demons]] attacks.
* In the 2010s property was sold off and redeveloped as a luck recharge station. As part of that the owner took grants to rebuild the shelter as a municipal shelter, but did little more than modernize what was already there.
* That recharge center slowly morphed into a restaurant and entertainment venue, before being redeveloped as Ghost Girls.

In 2006 there were able to open the first modern iteration of [[Ghost Girls]].
