Glossary

  • APT (Advanced Persistent Threat): For example, Fancy Bear, the DNC hackers, are APT28. APT29 is comprised of The Dukes, Cozy Bear, and CozyDuke (MITRE ATT&CK™)
  • APT2 (Advanced Persistent Troll): Shawn's term for most IRA-style accounts, which are a sort of amalgam of trolls and meatpuppets.
  • Bot: Fully automated account with no human interaction behind it.
  • Cyborg: Account that acts as a bot st times, but then has periods in which a human takes control.
  • Sock puppet: When an account is being controlled by a person running multiple accounts, generally for the purpose of amplifying a central account.
  • Meatpuppet: Similar to a sock, but multiple people are involved. If I hired Poke to just agree with and retweet me all day, she’d be a meat puppet. (Sorry Poke)
  • Troll: An account pushing a particular agenda, either because they like arguing with the other side, they’re working from an active agenda, or attempting to spread doubt and misinformation.
