Movebank GPS data

Use case

Animal GPS tracking data formatted in the Movebank Attribute Dictionary.

Darwin Core recommendation

Deployments (animal+tag associations) are parent events, with tag attachment (a human observation) and GPS positions (machine observations) as child events. No information about the parent event is provided other than its ID, meaning that data can be expressed in an Occurrence Core with one row per observation and parentEventID shared by all occurrences in a deployment.

Implementation

We recommend using the "movepub" R package, which was developed in collaboration with Movebank and GBIF. Its write_dwc() function automatically transforms (Frictionless) Movebank data to Darwin Core and EML (see also tutorial).

Example

O_ASSEN - Eurasian oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus, Haematopodidae) breeding in Assen (the Netherlands) is a bird tracking dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). The original dataset contains reference, GPS and acceleration data for 6 individuals.
