Identify Technologies Used on a Website

Why Would We Care What Was Used To Build a Website!?

A common task when researching new features, ideas or designs for a website is to go the internet and find similar examples of your goal within currently live websites.

For example you may like the way a News website uses an Accordion to display the top 5 recent articles. As a stakeholder in a project providing such examples to a development team can be helpful in conveying your ideas.

In performing this research and aggregating your examples list, it's also possible to get a mile-high view of what technologies were used to build the features you've chosen as examples -- by examining these technologies you can see if the proposed project infrastructure is helping or hindering to accomplish your goals.

Available Tools

  • Builtwith.com: A website that can examine a URL and tell you the technologies used to create that page. This tool has existed for quite a while and may not work fully with Angular or Javascript powered websites. Additionally, there is a browser extension should you not want to visit the page often.
  • Whatruns.com: A Chrome extension that can inform you of the technologies that were used to build a website. This tool is newer than Builtwith, and may give better results with Javascript powered websites.
