Scribes of the Cairo Geniza - v0.1 Beta

Scribes of the Cairo Geniza is a transcription project that allows users to contribute to the research of ancient Hebrew/Arabic documents by transcribing them through a custom front-end interface.

This is the version of Scribes that was released to the public for Beta in May 2018. (Well, sort of.)

Overview

  • Standard Zooniverse features: users can login; users can submit Classifications.
  • Completed info pages.
  • Project-specific features:
    • users can choose between Easy Hebrew and Easy Arabic workflows.
    • users can save (and resume) their work.
    • users can access either a Hebrew or Arabic keyboard for their transcription work.
    • website is viewable in either English, Hebrew, or Arabic.

Note: the "sort of" qualifier comes from the fact that the actual version released to the public for Beta didn't include PR #84 (Adjust Workflow Selection Logic) or PR #99 (Hide Workflows for Press Release). In any case, this version is considered stable and feature-complete for Beta.

Externals

For this custom front end to function properly, it has a few external dependencies, including:

  • a project setup on the Zooniverse platform, complete with info pages, tutorials, etc.
    • Hebrew and Arabic translations for said project setup. (English assumed as the default.)
  • several workflows on the Zooniverse project setup - notably for Easy Arabic and Easy Hebrew.
    • a PFE workflow for identifying the type of manuscript images (the results of this workflow then feed into the workflow that this CFE actually uses.)
    • a pipeline in Caesar that chains the outputs of certain workflows the the input of other workflows.
