John is a former Navy Seal, after his military life he fell into depression and alcohol, starting a borderline life like his relationship with Emily.
Before this fall he was a man of moral principles. He took in the MC after the death of the Main Character's parents, his father and John were childhood friends. To the MC he is a father figure.
As a boy he had a difficult life, his mother died when he was very young. For this reason the Main Character reminds him of him as a young man.
