DOI
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) can be assigned to any digital object with any level granularity. DOIs usually resolve to specific URLs.
A DOI name is a specific instance of a persistent Handle name, which is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). More technically, a DOI is a persistent identifier in line with IETF RFC 3650, 3651, 3652 (HANDLE system), ANSI/NISO Z39.84-2010, and ISO 26234. There is no limit length on a DOI name and it is case insensitive. (Source)
In order to register a DOI, a publisher needs to be registered at one of the registration agencies that can issue DOIs:
Thoth is capable of outputting CrossRef DOI Deposit XML files for convenient import into CrossRef. In 2023, Thoth has also become a Crossref Sponsor allowing it to directly register DOIs on behalf of publishers.
The Thoth Wiki has been developed in the context of the COPIM (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs) project. Individual contributions to the wiki have been made by Tim Elfenbein, Joanne Fitzpatrick, Rupert Gatti, Ross Higman, Hannah Hillen, Brendan O'Connell, Tobias Steiner, and Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei under the general editorship of Van Gerven Oei. All data are available under a CC-BY 4.0 license.
