Illustrative Context

People can walk but fish cannot.

Target Sense

  • The most generic verb for walking, i.e. specifically on foot (thus distinct from more general motion verbs such as English go), and at normal pace (thus distinct from run).
  • Some languages do not have a basic simplex verb like English walk, and the basic lexeme is in fact an expression literally equivalent to go on foot -- and as the basic lexeme, this should be given as the entry for that language.
  • Often, this verb overlaps in complex ways with other verbs of movement, so refer also to the definitions for go and run.
  • Avoid terms specific to going for a walk, as an desired activity in itself, rather than in order to change location.
