UbuntuInstall
Download the latest server version of Ubuntu Linux from the Ubuntu Website and burn it onto a CD. The latest Long Term Support version (currently 12.04LTS) is probably the best version to use. However if you have odd/older hardware, using a slightly earlier version may help if you run into issues (rare, but it does happen occasionally).
The installation of the OS is very straightforward and generally speaking I accepted all of the defaults. I am doing this installation on a network with DHCP so that the network configuration for the box is automatic. I will make some changes later in the process to convert to a static IP address but I felt that the installation would be a bit simpler starting out this way.
If all goes well with the install, all you will have to do is answer a few questions, remove the CD and reboot. You will then have a working version of Linux. If you install the server version as I describe here (not the desktop version) you will not have a gui (pretty graphical desktop) and will need to use the command line interface to complete the MisterHouse set up. If you follow these instructions carefully, it should not be all that difficult. For the most part, a gui interface on the MisterHouse server is unnecessary if you put it in a closet. By installing the server version, there is much less unnecessary software installed and the server goes much faster when it's finished.
When you install Ubuntu you will be creating one user account. This account should **NOT** be the one you intend to run MisterHouse under but rather your personal account as a system administrator on the server. In this HowTo, I will use the login ID “admin”.
